5 Signs of Sensitive Skin

5 Signs of Sensitive Skin

Your skin is your body’s first line of defense, and it’s important to take good care of it. However, if you’re like many people, you could be using skincare products that aren’t appropriate for your skin type. If you have sensitive skin, you need to be particularly selective about the products you use. If any of the following five indicators of sensitive skin describe your issues, then it may be time to rethink your beauty routine.

1. Dry, tight skin

Dryness is one of the most common skin issues that people with sensitive skin have. You may experience widespread dry skin all over your face. Or, you might notice dry patches here and there--they may flake and feel uncomfortable. A feeling of tightness goes hand-in-hand with dry skin. When your skin cannot retain moisture, it will feel taut and stretched thin.

2. Itchy, uncomfortable skin

Everyone gets an itch here and there throughout the day. But for people with itchy skin, the sensation is persistent and doesn’t go away even with scratching. And while occasional scratching is nothing to be alarmed about, scratching at excessively itchy skin will worsen irritation and inflammation. It is often an indication of sensitive skin.

3. Skin redness

One of the most common signs of sensitive skin is persistent redness. Your skin might frequently flush, just as it would when exposed to heat. Normally, however, skin flushing dissipates within minutes. If you have sensitive skin, you may have lingering redness.

4. Rashes and bumps

People with sensitive skin are more likely to develop irritating skin rashes and red bumps. In some cases, this indicates atopic dermatitis, commonly called eczema. Eczema is characterized by scatterings of red spots that can become incredibly itchy. Scratching them, however, will only make the problem worse. Eczema can sometimes be managed through lifestyle changes and product modifications. Some patients, however, require oral or topical medications.

5. Acne breakouts

Because sensitive skin is often persistently dry, it tends to produce more oil or sebum. As a result, the pores are more prone to becoming clogged, resulting in acne breakouts. What’s more, if you use harsh scrubs and other acne-fighting products, you may worsen the problem because harsh skincare products can increase irritation. Instead, try to stick with gentle products.
