3 Important Things to Know When Using AHAs

3 Important Things to Know When Using AHAs

There are several essential things you need to know about when you use alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) in your skincare routine. AHAs are an effective and safe way to exfoliate and gently resurface your skin, which can leave it glowing and rejuvenated. They can also address multiple skincare concerns, including the signs of aging. However, use them as directed on the product label, as some side effects can occur. Here are the most important facts to know when using AHAs.

1. Use sunscreen every day

Alpha hydroxy acids work by gently breaking down the bonds between the skin cells. This allows the dead skin cells at the surface to be sloughed off. Thanks to this chemical exfoliant, your skin is radiant and glowing. However, in the process of exfoliating the top layer of skin, AHAs reduce the resiliency of the skin when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun.

In other words, it’s essential to use sunscreen daily when incorporating AHAs into your beauty regimen. Please note, however, that there’s no need to do anything extra if you’re already using sunscreen. Just be sure to follow the directions, such as reapplying at regular intervals.

2. Start slowly when first introducing AHAs to your skincare routine

There are many types of AHAs, including lactic acid, glycolic acid, and mandelic acid. Some AHAs, such as glycolic acid, are stronger than others and may be more likely to cause temporary side effects, such as skin irritation and redness. However, no matter which ones are in your skincare product, it’s a good idea to introduce AHAs to your skincare regime gradually.

Start by applying it one to two days per week, then three days per week on non-consecutive days. Then, if your skin doesn’t react, you can continue to increase your usage. It’s also wise to first use a product with lower percentages of AHAs.

3. Be careful to apply your AHA product properly

First, cleanse your face and apply toner as usual. Then, apply your AHA product, such as a serum. Be sure to use a high-quality moisturizer, as excessive use can sometimes dry out the skin. You can use your AHA serum around the eyes, but avoid sensitive areas.
